Essential Skills For Essay Writing Section 2
1. Course Overview
In this course, you will learn all of the techniques, knowledge, and strategies needed to master your writings in school as well as the essays on the standardized tests (SAT/ACT/AP). We will mainly introduce you to 6 most common types of essay: Narrative, Descriptive, Compare & Contrast, Cause & Effect, Argumentative/Persuasive, Analytical.
This course will also integrate reading, grammar, vocab and critical thinking skills, by doing so it will provide students the opportunity to build a solid prerequisite reading, thinking, and writing skills to prepare for high school standardized testing and high school-level literature courses.
2. Target Learner
This course is a writing class targeting students G7-9. The fundamental skills needed to succeed are best thought of as habits of mind (being specific, building structure from the middle outward, etc.), and all learners will benefit greatly from how we will exercise and expand these habits.

Demonstrate ability to write in various modes: narrative, compare & contrast, analytical, descriptive, argument

Define, recognize, and engage in different levels of critical-thinking
Avoid simply paraphrasing or summarizing which are detrimental to your essay scores
Locate explicit textual information, draw complex inferences, and describe, analyze, and evaluate the information within and across multiple texts of varying lengths.
