Half-Day Kindergarten Class
The Half-day Kindergarten curriculum aims to prepare students for the following Reading Foundational Skills within the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) English and Language Arts: basic features of print; understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds; apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words; and reading emergent-reader texts with purpose and understanding.
With prompting and support, students will ask and answer questions about key details in text, retell familiar stories, recognize common types of texts (e.g. storybooks, poems), name author and illustrator of a story, describe relationships between illustrations and the story, compare and contrast the experiences of characters and engage in group reading activities.
Students will use a combination of drawing, dictating and writing to compose opinion pieces, informative and explanatory texts and to narrate a single or linked event. Students will also explore a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing and participate in shared research and writing projects.
History & Social Sciences
Students are introduced to basic spatial, temporal, and causal relationships, with an emphasis on the geographical and historical connections between the world as they know it today and the world a long ago. Students will learn: how to be a good citizen, recognize national and state symbols, match simple descriptions of work that people do, and compare and contrast the locations of people, places and environments.
